Things to Do Around Tok, Alaska

Tok, Alaska, is a prime destination for big game trophy hunting, offering independent, fly-in, and guided hunts with local outfitters.  Hunters can pursue game such as caribou, moose, black and grizzly bears, dall sheep and game birds in the surrounding vast, rugged landscapes. Tok is also  prime territory for freshwater fishing.  With its proximity to the Tanana, Tok, Klutina rivers, and various smaller streams and plentiful lakes, anglers can reel in grayling, Arctic char, pike, lake trout and rainbows.  On the nearby Copper and Gulkana rivers there are runs of gorgeous Copper River Red salmon, Coho, and King salmon.  

Tok provides the perfect jumping off point for day trips to Chicken, Alaska to experience the rich gold mining history of the area.  Travelers can go gold panning, tour an historic gold dredge, shop for gifts, look for wildlife, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the rugged beauty of Alaska on a hike or scenic drive.  On your way, stop by and pick plentiful blueberries, cranberries, and cloudberries on the Taylor Highway. 

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska’s largest national park, and a hidden gem, offers an awe-inspiring wilderness of towering mountains, glaciers, and vast valleys. Spanning over 13 million acres, this undiscovered big brother to Denali National Park is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts; a place where you can hike to your hearts' content, have epic backcountry adventures, go berry picking, hunt, fish, and have a great chance of seeing wildlife.  Visitors can take a self-guided audio tour down the awe-inspiring Nabesna Road, or explore gold mining history at McCarthy or Kennicott within the Park. 

Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, headquartered in Tok, Alaska, is a stunning natural area known for its diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife.  Covering over 700,000 acres, the refuge offers visitors the chance to experience pristine wetlands, forests, and tundra while observing species like moose, brown bears, and migratory birds in their natural habitats.  Flightseeing is the perfect way to get a sense of just how vast and wild this refuge really is.  Based in Tok, 40-MILE AIR routinely offers charter service within the Wrangell St.-Elias Preserve, Yukon-Charley Preserve, Alaska Range, Tetlin Wildlife Refuge and the Fortymile Country.

The Race of Champions 2025 is March 21-23!

Tok hosts the Race of Champions and Junior Race of Champions every year, and has many mushers with kennels based out of our town.   It has perfect snow conditions and long winters that make it an ideal location for dogmushing.  Cheer on mushers in a festive small town atmosphere while you're here in March, a truly magical time when the world is still frozen but the light has returned.

Mukluk Land is an experience you'll never forget. It's like walking through an eclectic live history book of interior Alaska. Tok has some of the darkest skies in the world, and especially in late winter/early spring, some of the clearest.
